Oct 20 OPENING NIGHT FIREWORKS with BLUE MOOSE (7.15pm) + SOME LIKE IT HOT BIG BAND (9.30pm)

The first night of he festival is always great fun. Crowds of people gather on the quays for the formal festival launch and, more importantly, the fireworks that follow. Afterwards the town's hostelries experience a tidal wave of thirsty humanity with many heading for the Riverbank House Hotel across the bridge for a munch and a pint then upstairs for Wexford's own big band, Some Like It Hot.

As a songwriter with legendary groups Scullion and Tír Na nÓg, and more recently solo, Sonny Condell has occupied an almost unrivalled place in the Irish musical landscape for the past thirty years. Condell continues to be one of the most respected writers and performers in Ireland. In the words of Philip King  “Sonny’s music has heart, soul, light, shade and a beckoning voice. This voice calls us to listen and listen we should to a writer whose songs are always new and exciting….Sonny Condell continues to be a great artist”.”

Afterplay revisits the lives of two of characters, Andrey Prozorov and Sonya Serebriakova, who had a previous existence in two separate Chekhov plays, Three Sister and Uncle Vanya respectively. Both characters are now middle-aged, but cannot escape the circumstances of their earlier lives; Andrey is still an only boy, confused, motherless and living in the remote rural town of Taganrog; Sonya is still deeply and hopelessly in love with the local doctor. Andrey now takes the train regularly from Taganrog to Moscow, allegedly to play as a violinist at the opera, Sonya is in Moscow to negotiate with the Ministry for Agriculture to try to save what's left of her dwindling estate. They meet by chance for one evening, twenty years after their previous fictional lives ended. Wexford Arts Centre. 12/10 Euro. Tel 053 23764.

Mark’s second album "Ghosts" has added substantially to the fanbase he’s already built since the release of his "33 ¼ Grand Street". Mark will be joined by Emmett Tinley, formerly of Prayerboat, a songwriter who deals in an altogether more doomed romanticism as evidenced on his acclaimed "Attic Faith" album.
